Oatmeal Crisps

Last Saturday, my dad, brothers Uno and Nico, sister Meg and I were in Powerplant, Rockwell for our traditional lunch and movie date. We were having lunch at the concourse level when my dad and Nico decided to browse and taste through the Bakers Dozen, a row of stalls in the middle of this floor that sells sweets, desserts and other baked goodies. They returned with a surprising treat.

They had bought a container or Q Kitchen's oatmeal crispies. They had opened it and started nibbling on it while the rest of us were still finishing our lunches. While waiting for the bill, I had noticed that almost all of us were there nibbling on a cookie. The funny thing is, when I bit my first cookie, I didn't think anything great of it. I just continued chitchatting with my family. It was just after I unknowingly finished the whole thing that I stopped and realized, "hey, that was a pretty good oatmeal cookie." I liked it because it is as it's called, crisp. Their oatmeal crispies are so thin, it intrigues me to think of making them myself. Though if you're a moist cookie lover, this is not for you. Nibbling on cookie after cookie (it's just that addicting, I tell you!), I just couldn't comprehend how they got them to taste that way. My dad gave me the final push, challenging me to make my own version of these crisps. Next video, Ate Carla and I would accept this challenge! We are going to make our own oatmeal crispies!

PS. Just so you know, this container didn't even reach our house. We gobbled them all up but the time we left the mall!

Wicked Oreos Tasting

In the last entry, Carla and I tried making our own wicked oreos at home. They didn't turn out looking as appetizing as the original ones, so we were a little hesitant to let others try it. Here is a video of us forcing offering our home-made wicked oreos to our brothers, Luis and Michael. Watch the video to see how they liked it! :)

Homemade Wicked Oreos

As I mentioned in my last post, Carla and I tried making wicked oreos at home. You can see how we did it here in this video! They don't look like wicked oreos you can buy from Flaming Wings, but they taste identical enough! Enjoy! :)

Wicked Oreos

Have you heard of the restaurant Flaming Wings? If you are a student, resident or frequent visitor near the areas of Katipunan, Taft Avenue or BF Homes, you should know this very affordable place well known for their flaming buffalo wings and chicken tenders. I’m also sure you’ve heard of their famous dessert – Wicked Oreos!

One order of these Wicked Oreos consists of three breaded oreos and one scoop of Big Scoop vanilla ice cream with what seems like cinnamon, cocoa powder and sprinkles, well, sprinkled on top. Because it’s served right after cooking, these hot oreo “puffs” contrast nicely with the rich taste of cold vanilla ice cream. The sprinkles are a great finishing touch, adding sugar and spice to the already delectable treat.

If you happen to be in the area of any of the three branches and are looking for a quick fix-up for lunch, Flaming Wings is the place to go. Quick, affordable meal, then this deadly... I mean heavenly dessert afterwards. Wicked Oreos is quite affordable at the price of 75 pesos! As a former student of UP Diliman, I used to frequent the Katipunan branch pretty often for lunch. I personally like to share one order with a friend. Although for most people, one serving is too good to share; they must have it all for themselves! Now that I’ve transfered to a school in Makati, there isn’t a branch near my area anymore and I’ve been craving for this oreo concoction for quite some time. That's why Ate Carl and I will try to recreate this dish at home! Watch out for this video coming up soon! :)

Hong Kong for the Weekend!

How was your long weekend, everyone? As you must have noticed from the title of this entry and the photo above, Carla and I traveled to Hong Kong with the whole Pena family! And if there’s two things that we Filipinos go to Hong Kong for, it’s to shop and EAT. On our second night there, we ate at the famous house that roast goose built – Yung Kee restaurant down by Wellington Street, Central, Hong Kong. With sixty-eight years of being renouned for it’s roasted goose, duck and other delicious dishes, I don’t have to tell you about how delectable our meal was. Since this is a dessert blog, I decided to talk about the dessert they served us instead!

The first dessert we tried was the mango pudding. I think their mango pudding was good, but there was nothing really special about it. The pudding had an okay consistency, but I think there were too many mango chunks in there to be able to fully appreciate the pudding. Carla liked it though. She just got her braces and she says it’s very braces-friendly :)

The second dessert was the mini egg custard tarts! These I really enjoyed. The individual serving was just the right size, it wasn’t too big nor too small. The crust was just flaky and crunchy enough. The custard-crust ratio was perfect, I think. It wasn’t too crusty that it overpowered the custard and made your mouth dry. There was just enough custard to nicely complement the crust. The custard was well-made, it wasn’t runny at all and the consistency was just right. It was soft and creamy and wasn’t too thick.

Mini egg custard tarts = WINNER :) Great way to end a delicious meal!
